We prepare patients for surgery and postsurgery recovery, and apply our broad knowledge and expertise to advance patient health and wellness. Medical–surgical nurses play a critical role in partnering with patients and the interdisciplinary team to address medical and psychosocial patient needs. Medical–surgical nursing also gave him a better understanding of the social determinants of health that contribute to poor health outcomes, especially among historically minoritized people. His experience influenced his decision to become an HIV NP. After honing his nursing knowledge and skills, RAV joined the unit after graduation. RAV was drawn to the specialty after taking part in a clinical externship on a medical–surgical unit specializing in HIV. RT took this advice and began his nursing career in medical–surgical nursing, becoming a leader in care coordination and, most importantly, a vocal patient advocate. In school, RT's preceptor encouraged him to be a medical–surgical nurse because the specialty provides a strong nursing foundation. Both of us took very different paths to arrive at the specialty. Medical–surgical nursing is the largest nursing specialization in the United States, with over 600,000 nurses providing care to people with a wide array of health conditions.
